In 2018, will India see the dawn of going paperless? Amongst all the global economies in the world, India is known to be a cash eccentric economy. Cash accounted for upwards of 95% of all transactions, 85% of workers were paid in cash, and almost half of the population didn’t even have bank accounts.

The government had greater untold plans for the country- dropping a bomb with demonetisation. Within months, the country had removed its currency notes by value from circulation and awaiting new ones. More than 1 billion people participated in a ‘reboot’ of the country’s financial and monetary system. Post demonetisation, the country has embarked its journey to transform into ‘Digital India’.

How is India becoming digital? This was the question that eight technology experts addressed on the first day of EmTech India 2017—an emerging technology conference organized by Mint and MIT Technology Review.

R. Chandrashekhar, president of software industry group Nasscom, said while the journey to digitization has begun, it is a matter of accelerating the pace at which it is happening.

“There is a World Bank report which says that a 10% increase in broadband penetration (in India) can lead to a 1.4% increase in GDP (gross domestic product), making Internet important for enhancing the growth of the economy.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of Vanijya Bhawan, a new office complex for the department of commerce in the national capital tomorrow. The building will approximately cost Rs. 226 crores.

Located near India Gate, the complex is being built on a plot of 4.33 acres, belonging to erstwhile Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D), the commerce ministry said in a statement.
